The Dongpo Culture was mainly formed when Su Dongpo, the literary giant in northern Song Dynasty was exiled to Danzhou. During his demotion period in Danzhou, Zhang Zhong, the prefecture chief of Danzhou and brothers Li Ziyun together raised funds to build a shelter for Su Dongpo and his youngest son, Su Guo. According to the idiom of scholarly and inquisitive individual (“载酒问字” in Chinese) in the Book of Han ·Biography of Yang Xiong, Su Dongpo named the house as Zai Jiu Tang ("载酒堂" in Chinese), and greeted friends and family, tutor lessons to students of Han and Li nationalities, to disseminate the culture of the Central Plains. The later generations built the Dongpo Academy in Northern Song Dynasty (1098) to commemorate Su Dongpo, which becomes a national key cultural relics protection unit.
